Jan Mankes holds a unique place in the history of Dutch art. Born on 15 August 1889 in Meppel to Beint Mankes and Jentje Hartsuiker, he became one of the most admired painters of his generation. Although his life was cut short - he died in 1920 at the age of just 30 - Mankes left behind an extraordinary body of work, celebrated for its remarkable sense of calm, stillness, and quiet contemplation.
